The American Reed Organ and the Harmonium
Robert B. Whiting
The newly-released second edition of Dr. Whiting's book is a valuable resource for all things related
to Estey reed organs. It contains a brief history of the company, copies of Estey catalogs from 1867,
1871, 1876, 1886, 1890, 1891, 1895, and 1903; the 1878 Organ Method that describes the stops, their use
and care; studio pictures, and several musical scores. An additional resource is the serial numbers
list, which can help in determining the age of your Estey reed organ.

to have for those who want to know more about reed organs.

Restoring & Collecting Antique Reed Organs
Horton Presley
The book is a step-by-step guide covering all aspects of restoration efforts, including entire chapters
on subjects such as tools, bellows restoration, tuning, disassembly procedures, case restoration,
keyboard restoration, etc. Annotated photos help to make the procedures listed in the book useful for
the inexperienced restorer. The appendix gives several supply sources.

This is a fascinating book that covers the history and development of the reed organ, from its humble
beginnings in the free reed instruments of antiquity to the glorious times of the late 1800s and early
1900s. The book also examines the music for and social history of the reed organ, looks at both
European and American developments, and includes an index of reed organ makers.

Reed Organ: Its Design and Construction
H. F. Milne
This reprint by the Organ Literature Foundation of a 1932 treatise is quite interesting. The book
covers the aspects of the design and construction of reed organs. Included are chapters on the pedal
reed organ, the use of couplers, tuning, and information on reed organ faults (such as cyphering) and
their remedies.
